In an interview on Marketing - The Podcast, Vanessa Gregoraci discussed the key skills needed to succeed in media ad sales. The commercial director at CNN Brasil explains how industry fragmentation and the digital ecosystem require technical expertise, active listening, and continuous learning.
Vanessa Gregoraci, commercial director at CNN Brasil, spoke with Bruno Gimenes on Marketing - The Podcast about the core skills required for media sales professionals.
In the video above, the executive analyzes shifting dynamics among agencies, advertisers, and media outlets, highlighting the decline of TV-exclusive centrality and the rise of multiplatform ecosystems. The full episode also explores journalistic credibility and the broader advertising landscape.
Market fragmentation and sales resilience
Outlining the industry landscape, Gregoraci pointed out that commercial competition has transformed dramatically with the growth of digital media. "Do you know how many media outlets operate in São Paulo today? In São Paulo alone, without counting regional outlets? 450 outlets," Gregoraci stated, noting that 70% of this market is digital, consisting of programmatic platforms, influencer agencies, and content hubs.
Facing such an intense volume of competitors vying for agency attention, Gregoraci emphasized that resilience is the foremost requirement for sales professionals. "Sales professionals need to be resilient, right? Because change happens daily. What was 450 today will be 460 tomorrow," she explained.
Beyond adaptability, Gregoraci emphasized that managing high-stakes pressure is part of the job's daily reality. "First, you have to love what you do. You have to genuinely enjoy it, because commercial sales is a high-pressure environment. What you sold yesterday is yesterday's news; what you sell today is what matters for tomorrow," she noted.
Technical expertise and business vision
Beyond relationship-building and networking, Gregoraci argues that sales executives must thoroughly understand their own media outlet and maintain a strong grasp of the real economy. She highlighted sectors such as infrastructure, sanitation, mining, and agribusiness—noting that agribusiness represents 30% of Brazil's GDP—as subjects that demand deep background knowledge during client conversations.
According to Gregoraci, lifelong learning underpins long-term professional relevance. "When you decide to become a doctor, you study for your entire life. Just because you chose advertising doesn't mean you stop learning. You have to study constantly," she declared, noting her own daily routine of reading and news monitoring at age 49.
The role of active listening in sales meetings
Another critical point raised by Gregoraci is demeanor during sales negotiations. She warned against the common mistake of pitching a media property relentlessly without taking the time to understand the advertiser's reality.
"We often rush in eager to talk, eager to pitch our media brand, eager to make the sale. And that leaves very little room to listen to the client," Gregoraci explained. For her, listening to the client's pain points and operational hurdles is what empowers the planning team with the insights needed to craft tailored solutions.
