Vanessa Gregoraci, Chief Commercial Officer at CNN Brasil, joined Bruno Gimenes on Marketing - The Podcast to discuss monetization challenges, editorial governance, and the evolution of commercial formats in the news industry.
The video above features the complete conversation, offering a behind-the-scenes look at how the commercial team collaborates with the network's editorial guidelines.
The Boundary Between Journalism and Advertising at CNN Brasil
The relationship between news coverage and commercial operations is guided by strict governance policies and global brand licensing. For Gregoraci, protecting the reputation of a brand present in 200 countries demands balance and common sense during advertiser negotiations.
"When we enter the territory of journalism versus commercial interests, there has to be good judgment on both sides," Gregoraci says. The director points out that the commercial team finds ways to satisfy brand objectives without compromising editorial integrity.
Shifting News Consumption and Multiplatform Reach
CNN Brasil launched its local operations with a multiplatform ecosystem built in from day one, leveraging YouTube and social media platforms as engines for audience growth and reaching younger demographics like Gen Z.
Gregoraci explains that the digital strategy evolved beyond simply repurposing TV clips to focus on exclusive digital productions: "Today, CNN develops specific products generated solely for social media. That means we now generate dedicated revenue streams directly from social."
Artificial Intelligence, Fact-Checking, and Brand Reputation
The integration of artificial intelligence in the newsroom is supported by weekly literacy training sessions for staff. Primary reporting and final copyediting remain strictly under the purview of journalists and an editorial triad across CNN Brasil, CNN Money, and digital.
Gregoraci also highlights the role of news outlets as trusted sources for LLMs, citing the company's newest initiative: "We recently announced a project to the market—there's an exciting PR rollout coming—called CNN for Brands, which is specifically designed to help brands enhance their reputation within LLMs."
Credibility as a Strategic Asset and Intangible Metrics
The value of a professional journalistic environment has once again drawn brands seeking institutional safety amid crises and misinformation. Gregoraci notes that the impact of this positioning transcends short-term quantitative indicators.
"It is an investment where you have to understand there won't always be a direct KPI. The KPI is intangible," Gregoraci explains when assessing the return on investment for branding and reputation campaigns in trusted media.
Expanding Beats and the Consultative Sales Approach
To engage audiences beyond hard news like politics and economics, the network expanded coverage into sports, gastronomy, and lifestyle. This editorial variety requires commercial executives to develop deep technical domain expertise across multiple industries.
"My sales executives also need to act somewhat like journalists so they can pitch a compelling narrative to clients. Often, they need deeper technical fluency to understand agribusiness, infrastructure, mining, energy, and sustainability," Gregoraci explains.
Custom Commercial Formats and Branded Content
Advertiser demand has shifted away from traditional ad space purchases toward integrated, customized content solutions. Among the favored formats are thematic industry forums.
Gregoraci highlights CNN Talks as a prime example: "It is a 100% commercial model, but it is backed by high-level content production tied to technical topics. These are the environments advertisers actively seek today—having the curation and endorsement of CNN while delivering real content."
Talent Guidelines and Journalism Ethics
On-air talent participation in commercial initiatives adheres to strict contractual and ethical boundaries. While hard news anchors are barred from commercial endorsements to safeguard news impartiality, entertainment and soft news hosts frequently participate in brand partnerships.
"We have a roster of journalists that remains strictly off-limits from a commercial perspective," Gregoraci emphasizes, pointing out that soft news talent is leveraged for ad-market collaborations instead.
Essential Skills for Modern Media Sales Executives
In a competitive market with over 450 media outlets operating in São Paulo, sales professionals must blend resilience, active listening, and technical product knowledge to craft meaningful proposals.
"The sales team must be resilient because change is constant," Gregoraci emphasizes. The director underscores the importance of thoroughly understanding a client's core challenges during discovery meetings before designing custom solutions.
Building Narrative Value and the Role of CNN Money
Developing custom commercial projects aims to generate reputational value for brands by leveraging specialized business and economic journalism tailored to the B2B segment.
"CNN has a strong mission here in Brazil, which is precisely to deliver information, context, credibility, and regional insights that help the country grow, especially through CNN Money, which is deeply B2B-focused," Gregoraci states.
Sector Verticals: Infrastructure and Agribusiness
Technical coverage of productive sectors such as infrastructure and agribusiness has strengthened the network's regional reach and connected it with vital economic supply chains across the country.
Gregoraci emphasizes the strategic value of specialized coverage: "It shines a light on an essential economic sector for Brazil while embracing a regional angle. It allows us to regionalize high-level business news."
