Flamengo to Net Millions from Natan's Transfer to Barcelona

The center-back's move from Real Betis could bring over €5 million to the Rio club's coffers.

Natan's transfer from Real Betis to Barcelona is expected to earn Flamengo over €5 million through economic rights and the FIFA solidarity mechanism. The windfall helps the club move toward its annual player sales budget target.

The transfer of center-back Natan from Real Betis to Barcelona is nearly finalized for €30 million and is set to provide a significant windfall to Flamengo. Developed in Flamengo's youth academy with subsequent stints at Red Bull Bragantino and Napoli before making his mark in Spanish soccer, the defender ensures the Rio club secures a notable share of the transaction.

Flamengo is set to receive over €5 million (around R$ 30 million) from the transfer, as it retains 12% of the player's economic rights and is entitled to 5% through the solidarity mechanism, totaling €5.1 million. In the video above, Bernardo Ramos breaks down the financial transaction and details how crucial this sum is for the club's balance sheet.

Sales Target and Club Budget

The club has set an annual budget target of R$ 256 million in revenue generated from player sales. So far, incoming revenue from departures has reached R$ 47 million—less than 20% of the projection—raised through the transfers of Iago, Vitor Hugo, and Juninho, the latter sold for $5 million. The remaining deficit exceeds R$ 200 million (roughly $50 million), putting pressure on the board to secure new deals.

According to Bernardo, Natan is a promising defender who could have been utilized more at Flamengo before departing. The journalist notes that the youth academy setup, linked to José Boto, must generate more revenue to prevent losing key first-team players. In addition, the club has nine players competing in the World Cup, creating opportunities for international market appreciation.

Roster Planning and Investment

Major new signings, such as Thiago Almada or Mastantuono, have been ruled out by the board. The recent €42 million investment to bring in Lucas Paquetá—who previously attracted an £80 million bid from Pep Guardiola's Manchester City while at West Ham—absorbed the team's available transfer funds. In Bernardo's view, Paquetá performs best in a deeper role, forming an ideal midfield trio alongside Jorginho and Arrascaeta.
