Flamengo Interested in Franco Mastantuono Loan

The 18-year-old Argentine midfielder has fallen out of favor at Real Madrid and emerges as a market opportunity for the Rio club.

Flamengo is exploring a loan move for midfielder Franco Mastantuono, who was signed by Real Madrid for 45 million euros. The negotiation represents a major tactical opportunity within the club's current financial framework.

Flamengo is interested in signing Argentine midfielder Franco Mastantuono on loan. The 18-year-old was sold by River Plate to Real Madrid for €45 million—the exact same transfer fee the Spanish club paid for Vini Júnior. The initial report regarding the Rubro-Negro's interest came from journalist Júlio Miguel Neto on the JS Live channel.

In the video above, Bernardo Ramos analyzes the player's technical profile and Flamengo's financial outlook in this transfer window. In Bernardo's assessment, the Argentine has the immediate quality to take on a starting role in the squad rather than merely serving as depth or competing for a spot on the bench.

Technical Traits and Tactical Fit

On the pitch, Mastantuono is a left-footed attacking midfielder who prefers operating from the right flank and cutting inside, though he can also function centrally in the playmaking role filled by Arrascaeta. Developed in River Plate's youth academy—where he scored a notable free kick against Boca Juniors at the Monumental de Núñez—the youngster frequently drives inside with the ball, opening the flank for Varela's overlapping runs. In Bernardo's view, this dynamic mirrors the role played by Gerson, establishing passing lanes with the central midfielders, center forward Pedro, and Savarino out on the opposite wing.

Loss of Playing Time in Spain and Deal Structure

Despite Real Madrid's substantial investment, the midfielder faced an inconsistent adaptation period in Europe. After earning starts under Xabi Alonso on the right wing, he saw his playing time diminish under Álvaro Arbeloa and is expected to receive limited minutes under José Mourinho. This downturn ultimately led to his omission from Argentina's World Cup squad. Consequently, a loan move to Flamengo has emerged as an appealing opportunity for the player to regain regular match fitness and form.

Financial Planning and Sales Targets

A permanent transfer is out of the question due to current valuations in the international market. Flamengo has set a budgetary goal of generating R$ 256 million from player sales by the end of the year. So far, the club has brought in R$ 47 million through the transfers of Iago, Vitor Hugo, and Juninho to Mexican soccer. As a result, the board lacks the financial flexibility for blockbuster permanent deals—such as a potential repatriation of Paquetá—and must hit its sales targets before pursuing significant permanent acquisitions.

An additional revenue stream could materialize through the transfer of center-back Natan. According to Catalan outlet Mundo Deportivo, the defender developed by Flamengo could move from Betis to Barcelona for €30 million. Should the deal go through, Flamengo would receive a portion of the fee through a retained sell-on clause alongside the 5% FIFA solidarity mechanism, opening up leeway for loan moves during this window.
