The final day of the Nexus Global Summit 2023 was a whirlwind of emotions and learning for the young members of Turma do Jiló's Youth Volunteers (VJ). Immersed in the largest event for philanthropy and youth leadership, they experienced moments that promise to resonate throughout their journeys and in the mission of inclusive education they so strongly advocate for.
The Radiance of Youth Volunteers on the Global Stage
Beyond absorbing new knowledge, our young people didn't just stay in the audience. They had the opportunity to shine in a workout room, presenting their ideas and the strength of the Youth Volunteers. It was a true showcase of leadership, demonstrating the transformative capacity these young people possess and that Turma do Jiló fosters. This exchange space allowed their voices to be heard in a global context, connecting them to a vast network of change-makers.
Unforgettable Encounters: The Inspiration of Malala
One of the event's highlights, which has already resulted in a special video on our page, was the encounter with the iconic Malala. The opportunity to stand alongside a figure of such magnitude, a tireless advocate for female education and human rights, undoubtedly left a profound mark. Malala embodies resilience and the belief in the power of education, values that Turma do Jiló shares and seeks to inspire in its own volunteers.
Challenging Narratives and Broadening Horizons
The lectures and conferences offered ample food for thought. One speech, in particular, resonated deeply, addressing the issue of single narratives and the importance of challenging them. A speaker shared her frustration with encountering the 'single story' of Africa portrayed only as famine and poverty. She said: "When I moved to the US, I was confronted with the single story that the face of Africa was a starving child and that the face of poverty was a single farmer in Africa. This made me angry, it made me sad.". This reflection is crucial for inclusive education, as it reminds us of the need to seek multiple perspectives and avoid stereotypes, building a more complete and just understanding of the world and its people.
Participation in the Nexus Global Summit 2023 was another step in the transformative journey of Turma do Jiló and its Youth Volunteers. Experiences like this are essential for forming critical, engaged citizens capable of building a more inclusive and egalitarian future. The impact of these reflections will extend far beyond the conference halls, inspiring concrete actions and the continued building of bridges for a welcoming society. Come join us, because at Turma do Jiló, nobody gets left behind!
