Youth Volunteers and Turma do Jiló Fight Period Poverty

A transformative initiative in the Sapé community brings dignity and awareness about menstrual health.

Turma do Jiló, through its Youth Volunteers, carried out a significant initiative in the Sapé community, São Paulo. The effort focused on combating period poverty by distributing hygiene kits and facilitating discussions on health and rights. The project also highlighted residents' ongoing struggle for better living conditions, basic sanitation, and housing.

On June 3, 2023, Turma do Jiló and its Youth Volunteers embarked on an inspiring mission in the Sapé community, located in the east zone of São Paulo. The initiative aimed not only to combat period poverty but also to foster dialogue about the complex realities of a community that daily strives for dignity and improved living conditions.

Welcomed with a warm breakfast, the young volunteers, accompanied by leader Alexandra, began the day with a group discussion. This crucial moment allowed for the exchange of experiences and a deep understanding of the structural challenges faced by residents. The journey deepened with a tour through Sapé's narrow streets, revealing the resilience and willpower of a community that builds and supports itself mutually.

The Challenges of the Sapé Community

During the dialogue and tour, the critical problems of the Sapé community were highlighted. The lack of basic sanitation is an urgent issue: open sewers and irregular water and electricity connections are the daily reality. Residents, like Cris, shared their stories of struggling for housing, building their homes with their own hands after losing their jobs and facing difficulties paying rent, especially during the pandemic. The community, primarily composed of vulnerable families, demonstrates remarkable unity, transforming the space with collective efforts, such as building a square for children, which is vital for their safety and leisure.

Combating Period Poverty with Information and Support

Period poverty was the central theme of the initiative, addressed in partnership with Projeto Sobre Nós. By collecting and assembling approximately 200 hygiene kits, the Youth Volunteers assisted the project in the monthly distribution of sanitary pads, bringing menstrual dignity to menstruating individuals. Light and relaxed discussion circles demystified taboos and shared essential information about the menstrual cycle and necessary care. Volunteers from Projeto Sobre Nós, like Sara, emphasized the importance of openly discussing the topic, dispelling the idea that menstruation is something bad or frightening.

Engagement and Social Transformation

In addition to distributing kits and educational discussions, the initiative promoted various activities. Youth Volunteers, children, and local women interacted in discussion circles and on a creative mural honoring all the women of the community. This space for expression allowed for the manifestation of motivational and artistic messages. The day culminated in moments of relaxation, with outdoor games and much joy, strengthening the bonds between volunteers and residents. Sheila, one of the supporters, was recognized for her role in connecting the initiative to the community's real needs.

At the end, a thank-you circle sealed the day with emotion and mutual recognition. Turma do Jiló and the Youth Volunteers reaffirmed their commitment to continue supporting the Sapé community, inspired by the strength, courage, and respect they witnessed. This action is a powerful reminder of how volunteering and inclusive education can build bridges and generate positive changes, showing that, together, no one is left behind.
