Youth Volunteerism: Getting Hands-On with Turma do Jiló

Young Volunteers from Turma do Jiló and Mãos na Massa Build Homes and Futures

Discover how the Mãos na Massa project, in partnership with Turma do Jiló, mobilizes young volunteers to transform lives. They not only build homes but also foster deep learning about inclusion and diversity. It's an inspiring initiative that impacts both those who receive and those who donate their time and energy.

Turma do Jiló's vlog #11 takes us on an exciting and transformative experience: the Youth Volunteerism project in partnership with Mãos na Massa. We follow a group of young people who, driven by inclusion, got their hands dirty building a home for Carlos Alberto, a person with disabilities. More than bricks and cement, this project builds dreams and shapes more conscious citizens, promoting real social transformation.

Mãos na Massa: Building Dreams and Inclusion

The Mãos na Massa (Hands-On) project is an initiative that brings together young people aged 15 to 23 on weekends to transform the lives of individuals, especially those with physical disabilities. According to one of the organizers, these individuals often lack the physical ability to help with their own construction work. Unlike conventional construction, where a contractor is hired, this project mobilizes the community and volunteerism. The idea is that, just as in many construction projects in underserved communities where family and friends come together on weekends to build, Mãos na Massa amplifies this solidarity, offering crucial support to those who lack the physical capacity to lead or actively participate in the construction. It's a true chain of good that directly impacts a person's life, transforming a space and generating hope.

Carlos Alberto's Home: An Adapted House Full of History

In this edition, the beneficiary was Carlos Alberto, who has arthrogryposis syndrome, a condition that requires him to use a wheelchair. He expressed immense gratitude for the initiative by Turma do Jiló and Mãos na Massa. Carlos shared his vision for painting his house, inspired by his childhood in the periphery, observing "several small houses stacked on top of each other" from his window. His story also reminds us of the importance of inclusive education. He recalled his journey to learn to read and write at ACD (Associação de Assistência à Criança Deficiente – Association for Assistance to Disabled Children), mentioning the institution's name evolution from "Social Assistance for Defective Children" to "Association for Assistance to Disabled Children," emphasizing the correct terminology: "we are people with disabilities, not defective." Thus, the project is not just about the physical structure, but about adapting the space to Carlos's specific needs, ensuring his autonomy and well-being.

Youth Volunteerism: Practical Experience and Personal Growth

Young volunteers from Turma do Jiló, also from partner clubs like Monte Líbano and Paulistano, experienced an unforgettable practical journey. A volunteer named Isabela highlighted the importance of moving beyond theory: "We were already studying the topic of people with disabilities in classes, so it was all very theoretical. Coming here, we were able to put everything we had seen much more into practice." Participants had the chance to truly "get their hands dirty," learning to lay bricks, mix paints, and understand how the construction could be adapted. More than technical skills, they developed empathy and a deep understanding of each person's needs. As Carlos Alberto emphasized, "this project, this work doesn't just build bricks, it doesn't just build houses, it builds people." Volunteerism is seen as a privilege and an opportunity for personal growth, transforming the lives of those who help as much as those who are helped.

Conclusion: The joint initiative of Mãos na Massa and Turma do Jiló, with the collaboration of Youth Volunteerism, is a clear example of how social action can generate profound impacts. By building and adapting homes, they build bridges to a more inclusive and just future, transforming not only physical environments but also the perspectives and hearts of everyone involved. May this flame of volunteerism continue to burn brightly, inspiring more young people to be agents of change and to live inclusion in practice!
