Youth Volunteering: Turma do Jiló in NYC for Nexus Global Summit
Young people from Turma do Jiló embark on a transformative journey in New York, combining learning at the UN, creativity at an advertising agency, and valuable lessons on storytelling.
Turma do Jiló brought 15 young social entrepreneurs to the Nexus Global Summit in New York. The first day included a visit to the UN and an inspiring workshop at the Pereira O'Dell agency. The experience focused on the importance of storytelling and overcoming "stage fright" to communicate social causes.
The Turma do Jiló team, led by Carolina Videira, along with 15 young participants from the Youth Entrepreneurship project, embarked for New York. The objective was to participate in the Nexus Global Summit, a global conference that brings together brilliant minds to discuss and accelerate social change. The trip, documented by Laura Bruscagin and the team, promised intense days rich in learning, starting with an immersion at the UN headquarters and a surprising visit to an advertising agency.
The Mission in New York and the Nexus Global Summit
The Nexus Global Summit is a movement that connects young leaders, philanthropists, social entrepreneurs, activists, and impact investors from over 70 countries. The annual conference, held at the UN in New York, aims to facilitate networking and accelerate passions to change the world faster and together. With over 350 participants, the event offers inspiring panels – this year, featuring Malala addressing gender equality – and breakout rooms for discussions on specific topics such as climate change, artificial intelligence, and communication. The young people from Turma do Jiló had the opportunity to receive a private briefing at the UN, learning about the work of various departments and identifying ways to contribute.
Creative Immersion at Pereira O'Dell
After checking into the hotel and having lunch with Seu Rui in Soho, the first day's journey continued to the advertising agency Pereira O'Dell in New York. At the invitation of Turma do Jiló's great partner, Lou, the young people participated in a super creative workshop. The workshop focused on how to tell inspiring stories and present in public, mediated by Sil Curiati, a storytelling expert and founder of the Story company. Sil, who described herself as the "Forrest Gump in a skirt" for always having a story to tell, explained that her company specializes in women and underrepresented audiences, demonstrating the importance of narrative in different contexts.
Stories That Transform and the Power of Change
Sil Curiati highlighted that stories possess a unique power to connect people – with themselves and with each other. They can be factual, journalistic, fictional, analogies, or parables, but what makes them special is how they are told, to whom, and at what moment. The speaker also prompted reflection on change, comparing it to a physical movement that isn't natural, but challenging and possible. She emphasized generosity and the understanding that change is difficult for everyone, but with effort, it is achievable. "Stage fright," as one of the young people pointed out, was discussed as a symbolic fear of exposing one's ideas.
At the end of the day, in a group discussion, the young people shared their impressions. Words like "novelty," "reflection," "learning," "empathy," "opportunity," "value of time," and "eye-to-eye contact" echoed among them. Many highlighted the importance of purpose and how stories have the power to transform lives, generating happiness and inner peace. The experience reaffirmed the importance of each individual carrying and sharing their own story, enriching the collective and individual journey of social transformation promoted by Turma do Jiló.
