Youth Volunteering: Transforming Lives at Lar Santana

Young volunteers and seniors share transformative experiences about life and mental health

The 'Turma do Jiló' Youth Volunteering project visited Lar Santana, focusing on the mental health of the elderly. The initiative fostered deep and emotional exchanges, with young people learning valuable life lessons. A highlight was the inspiring story of Maria Angélica, Brazil's first female sports journalist.

Through its Youth Volunteering program, Turma do Jiló made a moving visit to the Santana Senior Home. Aiming to explore mental health in old age and foster intergenerational exchanges, the initiative brought together young volunteers and the home's residents for a day full of learning and connection. Maria Luísa Gaiotto, the project's supervisor, led the yellow and red groups on this transformative journey, which unveiled incredible stories and reinforced the importance of empathy.

Welcome and Understanding at Lar Santana

Upon arrival, the volunteers were welcomed by the Lar Santana staff, who explained the institution's operations and the specifics of the residents' lives. It was learned that many seniors, even those married, live at the home while their spouses remain at home, especially in cases of illnesses like Alzheimer's. The institution allows 24/7 visits, Monday through Sunday, ensuring family connection.

The home's staff emphasizes the importance of keeping residents active and engaged. They are encouraged to have meals in the dining room and participate in activities, preventing them from being isolated in their rooms all day. "We insist they have meals in the dining room," explained one of the staff members. For those who prefer more privacy, food is brought to their rooms, respecting each individual's privacy. The home has also hosted therapy dogs during visits, providing moments of joy and affection.

Deep Exchanges and Life Advice

The interaction between the young volunteers and the seniors was one of the visit's highlights. Conversations about life, mental health, and past experiences flowed naturally. In addition to chatting, the volunteers brought music to the piano, took photos with Polaroids, and organized a fun bingo game, creating an atmosphere of joy and relaxation.

One of the most impactful stories shared was that of a grandmother who, at 70, decided to choose her own senior home, visiting several places until she found one where she felt comfortable. This experience shows that choosing a home can be an act of autonomy and well-being. The way we age, the staff emphasized, reflects the life we've led: "We age in the way we have lived," with personality traits becoming more pronounced in old age.

The young people expressed how touching the experience was. For Maria Luísa, volunteering "really moves you" and takes you out of your bubble, allowing you to "put yourself in someone else's shoes." Gabi highlighted the importance of "breaking out of your social bubble" and developing empathy, while Bernardo emphasized the opportunity to "help the community" and gather stories that are "quite impressive."

Maria Angélica: Pioneering Spirit and Inspiration

Among the incredible stories, that of Maria Angélica stood out. She introduced herself as Brazil's first female sports journalist. At 18, she won a university competition and began working at Gazeta Esportiva, covering 'elite' sports like equestrianism and golf. Her professional journey is a testament to courage and pioneering spirit, especially during a time of dictatorship and without the requirement of a diploma for journalists.

After years in sports journalism, Maria Angélica made a surprising transition, accepting an invitation from Cardinal Dom Paulo Evaristo Arns to be his press advisor. This career change demonstrates the versatility and impact of her journey. Her advice to the young volunteers? "Never give up." A powerful message that resonates with the life experience of a woman who blazed trails and adapted to different realities.

The visit by Turma do Jiló to Lar Santana was much more than a simple interaction; it was a generational encounter that fostered mutual learning and deep reflections on life, mental health, and the importance of caring for one another. These exchanges enrich both seniors and young people, building a more welcoming and just society, where experience and energy complement each other in a continuous cycle of inclusion.
