Youth Volunteering & Chefs Especiais: Culinary Inclusion

Young volunteers from Turma do Jiló immerse themselves in inclusive cuisine with Chefs Especiais, fostering autonomy and learning

The Purple group of Turma do Jiló's Youth Volunteering program visited Chefs Especiais, a project that uses gastronomy to promote autonomy for people with Down Syndrome. The young people learned culinary techniques and participated in a practical class, preparing delicious dishes and experiencing inclusion in the kitchen. A transformative experience that connects learning, flavor, and social impact.

In an inspiring initiative, Turma do Jiló, through its Youth Volunteering program, fostered a significant encounter between young volunteers and Chefs Especiais. The visit's objective was to provide practical experience in inclusive gastronomy, where people with Down Syndrome develop autonomy and skills for the job market.

Accompanied by the team, the young people from the Purple group were warmly welcomed. After a relaxed session of introductions, where everyone could share a bit about themselves – such as Helena, 12 years old, or Zazie, 32 – the collaborative energy was already palpable, setting the stage for a day full of learning and interaction.

Hands-On: Learning and Autonomy in the Kitchen

With their identification badges and heightened curiosity, the volunteers went straight to the kitchen. The experience began with a basic but essential lesson: learning the "claw grip", a safe cutting technique that protects fingers. They handled tomatoes, cheeses, and tapioca, literally getting their hands dirty under the careful guidance of the Chefs Especiais.

From Garden to Plate: The Taste of Freshness

One of the highlights of the activity was a visit to the garden. The young people were able to harvest fresh herbs, such as mint, and learn about the importance of fresh and organic ingredients in cooking. This connection to the origin of food further enriched the experience, showing that gastronomy goes beyond the pot, starting from the earth.

Tasting and Reflections: The Impact of Inclusion

After preparing the main dish – with plenty of cheese and tapioca – and a delicious coconut tapioca cake for dessert, the most anticipated moment arrived: the tasting. Reactions were unanimous: "Very good!", "Delicious!", and "It tastes like rice pudding!", as Manu commented. The joy and pride visible on the faces of the participants, both volunteers and Chefs Especiais, highlighted the success of the initiative.

This experience reinforces Turma do Jiló's mission to build bridges for a welcoming and just society, where no one is left behind. Youth volunteering proves to be a powerful agent of transformation, inspiring future generations to value diversity and inclusion in all spaces, including the kitchen.
