Youth from Turma do Jiló at the UN: Leadership and Global Impact

An inspiring journey of young Brazilians who transformed the UN and the NEXUS Global Summit.

Turma do Jiló took young volunteers to New York on a global mission. They visited UN headquarters, participated in the prestigious NEXUS Global Summit, and even met Prince Harry, reinforcing the power of youth in social change. The experience highlighted the importance of inclusive education and active philanthropy.

Turma do Jiló, with its Youth Volunteerism initiative, realized a grand dream: to take a group of young Brazilians on a transformative experience in New York. This journey, rich in learning and action, included visits to the UN headquarters, participation in the NEXUS Global Summit, and a significant meeting with Prince Harry, Duke of Sussex. The central objective was to demonstrate the potential of youth in building bridges towards a more just and inclusive society.

Volunteerism in Action and the Power of Narrative

On New York soil, the youths' first stop was at City Harvest, the largest food rescue organization in New York. There, they rolled up their sleeves and repackaged food, transforming it into basic food baskets and experiencing social justice and empathy firsthand. This immersion highlights the importance of philanthropy and volunteerism, topics that, according to the young people, are little explored in the Brazilian educational system, unlike in other countries.

To enhance their ability to communicate their ideas and impact the world, the group participated in a workshop on artificial intelligence and storytelling with the marketing agency Pereira O'Dell. The session prepared them for presentations at NEXUS, teaching them how to handle tension and use the audience's energy to their advantage.

The NEXUS Global Stage and the Youth Voice

The highlight of the trip was the NEXUS Global Summit, a worldwide event for philanthropy and impact. Turma do Jiló was present as the youngest delegation, standing out for their passion and desire for change. NEXUS, unlike other conferences, encourages networking based on shared passions, with the key question: "What is your passion? How can I help you?"

At the event, the young people had the honor of meeting Prince Harry, who emphasized the importance of giving a voice and platform to youth, as they bring a "clear mindset" to global problems. The culmination of this experience was the moving presentation by Felipe Bronstein, only 17 years old, who represented Brazil. In his speech, Felipe addressed climate justice and youth leadership, highlighting the need to provide tools and opportunities for the new generation to lead transformation in their communities, even amidst challenges like the lack of a strong donation culture in Brazil. He emphasized that young people, despite not being superheroes, share a common desire to change society.

Purpose, Emotions, and Transformative Legacies

The journey also included deep reflections on well-being and purpose. A workshop in Milburn, New Jersey, explored positive psychology, discussing life satisfaction, emotion management, and the pursuit of a feeling of "being excited to participate in life."

The conversation about legacy and impact gained a personal touch with the mention of the story of Matthew, a friend who dedicated his life to helping people in difficult times, and the inspiration of Carola, one of the project's creators, who, motivated by her son's experience, democratized inclusive education in Brazil. These stories reinforce that the meaning of life goes beyond accumulating wealth, focusing on building bridges and helping others. NEXUS plays a fundamental role in connecting communities of wealth with communities of impact, driving social change.

Turma do Jiló's experience in New York is a testament to the power of youth leadership and inclusive education. It inspires everyone to actively engage in building a future where economic, climate, and social justice go hand in hand, and where "no one is left behind." It is an invitation to collaborate to transform the world, one project and one passion at a time.
