In this article, we delve into the inspiring story behind The Jiló Crew, an inclusive ecosystem transforming education and Brazilian society. We'll explore the personal journey of a mother, Mariana Kupfer, and her son, João, whose initial experiences with disability and inclusion served as the catalyst for creating a movement that now supports schools, businesses, and families, striving for a more welcoming and equitable society for all.
The Discovery and the Power of Acceptance
The lives of many parents change drastically with an unexpected diagnosis. For João's mother, it was a moment of shock and despair. Faced with numerous medical appointments and a heavy heart, she observed characteristics such as hypotonia (a body with low muscle tone) and ocular nystagmus (eyes with continuous involuntary movements) in her son. After days of anguish and a cry that lasted 24 hours, strength and acceptance emerged: 'Now I will take care of him.'
The cause behind João's characteristics was identified as a specific genetic mutation on a chromosome, which explained his delayed development. Despite the uncertainty and the lack of clear answers from initial tests, the determination to seek the best for João and understand his needs became unshakeable.
The Challenge of School Inclusion in the Past
About six and a half years ago, the landscape of inclusive education in Brazil was quite different. Inclusion laws were not yet as robust, and many schools were not legally obligated to accept children with disabilities. Leaving João at home, even if well cared for, simply wasn't an option for his family.
The mission was clear: it was essential for João to be part of a group, for other children to notice him, understand his needs, and help him. This tireless pursuit of true coexistence with diversity and João's full integration was one of the pillars that propelled the creation of The Jiló Crew, demonstrating the importance of going beyond home care and promoting social inclusion.
Building Bridges for Adapted and Conscious Education
For inclusion to truly occur, curriculum adaptation is absolutely essential. The experience with João highlighted the need for in-depth discussions with the school on how to individualize teaching, ensuring he had adequate access to knowledge. More than just accepting the presence of students with disabilities, João's school recognized the urgency of openly discussing disability and differences with all students.
This educational approach aims to shift perception: it's crucial to see a child with a disability as a child with needs like any other, and to see beyond the diagnosis. This perspective facilitates the provision of necessary support, creating a truly empathetic environment. The greater goal is to prepare the child for adult life, fostering their independence, however small, so they can develop their maximum potential.
An Inclusive and Equitable Future
João and his mother's story is a powerful reminder that inclusive education is a path of continuous transformation. By embracing acceptance, implementing adaptation, and broadly promoting education, The Jiló Crew demonstrates that it's possible to build a future where no one is left behind. It is through real experiences, the dedication to creating accessible spaces and training prepared professionals that a truly welcoming and equitable society is nurtured, in line with the principles of the UN 2030 Agenda that inspire the organization.
