SXSW: Inclusion, Accessibility, and the Connected Future

Turma do Jiló Explores Progress and Challenges in Building a More Accessible World at SXSW

Turma do Jiló attended SXSW, offering a behind-the-scenes look at one of the largest tech and innovation events. This article delves into discussions on accessibility, combating 'inspiration porn,' and technology's impact on humanity. It highlights how we can build a more inclusive future and showcases inclusion's role in shaping tomorrow.

The Turma do Jiló team embarked for SXSW (South by Southwest), one of the world's largest gatherings of technology, innovation, and culture, to bring valuable insights into inclusive education and diversity. From the exhausting journey to vibrant Austin, Texas, the objective was clear: to uncover the trends that will shape a more welcoming future.

SXSW: Innovation and Inclusion in Focus

The SXSW experience began with credential pickup at the Convention Center, where the organization already demonstrated a commitment to accessibility. There was a specific point to request accompaniment or special access for credentials, highlighting the importance of an event for everyone. The city of Austin became the stage to explore talks and installations, with the Turma do Jiló team attentive to every detail.

Among the notable initiatives, the festival implemented various accessibility checkpoints and sensory rooms, considering participants such as autistic individuals. Identification wristbands for autistic companions, ensuring priority in lines, were a practical example. However, the accessibility journey still faces its challenges.

Accessibility Challenges: Where We Can Improve

Despite the efforts, SXSW revealed there's still much room for improvement. Not all talks had Libras interpreters (Brazilian Sign Language), and a lack of respect for priority seating for people with disabilities was a recurring issue, especially among Brazilian visitors. Furthermore, sensory overstimulation in some presentations, with flickering screens, demonstrated the need for greater sensitivity towards audiences like autistic individuals. The fight for a 100% accessible event continues, and Turma do Jiló documented both the progress and the barriers.

Deconstructing "Inspiration Porn": More Than Overcoming

One of the most impactful debates at SXSW was about the concept of "inspiration porn," coined by activist Stella Young. The term describes the objectification of people with disabilities, portrayed as "inspirational" merely for existing or overcoming daily challenges. The discussion emphasized that people with disabilities are much more than their condition; they are complex individuals with multifaceted identities. The challenge is to create authentic narratives where disability is part of the story, but not the sole focus, as in the film Flash Before the Bang, about a deaf runner who defeated his opponents, not his deafness.

Technology, Social Media, and the Human Future

SXSW also delved into future trends, highlighting Artificial Intelligence (AI) and digital transformation. Despite concerns about technology and its impacts, the central message is that we are the "transition generation" and have control over our future. Exploration, like NASA's Europa Clipper mission, featuring a poem by Ada Limón and designs inspired by human connections, shows that technology can be a vehicle for unity and the pursuit of knowledge, “something we do together that connects us all.”

On the other hand, social media was analyzed for its ambivalent role. While platforms for accessing valuable information, they also become stages for hate and harassment, such as Meghan Markle's experience during her pregnancies. It's concerning how hate, often coming from other women, spreads. There is an urgent need for systemic and cultural changes to ensure online safety and well-being, especially for children and women in leadership positions. Furthermore, the simple inclusion of subtitles in videos is fundamental; studies show that 70% of Generation Z and Millennials prefer to consume content with subtitles, making information accessible to a much larger audience, including 1 in 20 adults in the US with some hearing difficulty.

An Inclusive Future: Our Collective Journey

Turma do Jiló's presence at SXSW reinforces the idea that building a truly inclusive future is a continuous and collective effort. We must celebrate advances while also acknowledging and combating shortcomings. Technology should be a tool for human connection and accessibility, and each of us has a role in promoting respect and diversity in both the digital and physical worlds. May the reflections from SXSW inspire everyone to be agents of change, ensuring that "nobody is left behind."
