In a special Myths vs. Truths segment, we address crucial topics for building a more inclusive and informed society. Follow along to discover the liberating truths and the myths that need to be dismantled.
Sexual Orientation: Not a Choice, But a Development
One of the most persistent myths claims that LGBTQIAPN+ individuals become gay, lesbian, bisexual, or pansexual because their parents "failed" as sexual role models. This is a mistaken belief. Sexual orientation is not a personal choice, much less the result of parental failures.
It develops throughout each individual's life, naturally and complexly. It's fundamental to understand that one doesn't "choose" a sexual orientation; it simply exists. Therefore, the correct terminology is sexual orientation, not "sexual preference" or "sexual option." Respecting this diversity is an essential step towards inclusion.
Gender: A Social Construct and Personal Identity
The assertion that gender is a social construct is an undeniable truth. This term is used to designate the set of social and cultural characteristics attributed to perceptions of what is considered masculine and feminine in a given society and era. These perceptions can vary greatly across different cultures and throughout history.
Because it is a social construct, there can be a significant conflict between the gender assigned to a person at birth (based on their biological characteristics) and the gender with which they truly identify. It is in this context that gender identity emerges, referring to the gender a person feels they are, regardless of biological sex. Recognizing and validating gender identity is a pillar of diversity and respect.
Homoparental Families: Love That Transforms and Educates
Another common and harmful myth suggests that same-sex parents "hinder" the upbringing and development of their children. This is categorically a myth. Studies and daily reality demonstrate that the ability to educate and provide a healthy and loving environment is not linked to parents' sexual orientation or gender, but rather to the quality of the relationship, affection, and dedication.
The traditional family unit is just one of many valid and functional family formats. Homoparental families offer the same love, support, and values as any other family structure, contributing to the development of happy, healthy, and well-adjusted children. What matters is love and care, not the gender composition of the parents.
Turma do Jiló reiterates its commitment to inclusive education and diversity. Informing oneself is the first step to dismantling prejudices and building bridges towards a more just and welcoming society, where no one is left behind. Join us on this journey of learning and respect.
