The journey began with a series of medical appointments and uncertainty. João exhibited hypotonia (low muscle tone) and ocular nystagmus, a continuous tremor in his eyes when trying to focus. After a period of deep anguish and 24 hours of crying, João's mother made a crucial decision: "Now I'm going to take care of him."
A genetic mutation on a specific chromosome was discovered, most likely the cause of his hypotonia and developmental delay. However, the search for answers was frustrating; many tests revealed nothing that provided a clear diagnosis. The real shift came with the acceptance of João's condition, a milestone that occurred around two years of age.
Challenging Norms: The Quest for School Inclusion
When João turned two, school inclusion became the next major challenge. Six and a half years ago, inclusion laws were not as consolidated in Brazil, and schools were not legally obliged to accept children with disabilities. However, leaving João at home, even if well-cared for, was not an option.
The family wanted him to interact with other children, to have access to a school environment that would stimulate his social and cognitive development. The objective was clear: for him to be part of the group, for the children to notice him, understand his needs, and help him in this process.
Partner School: Adapting and Raising Awareness
For inclusion to be effective, it was crucial to adapt the curriculum to João's specific needs. His mother and the school had many discussions on how to implement this adaptation. The school, recognizing the necessity, took a commendable initiative: it decided to talk about disability and differences with the other children, promoting empathy and understanding.
This approach was transformative. When we gain the necessary distance to see children with disabilities "like all others", who also have their unique needs, the process of support and inclusion becomes much easier and more natural.

João has his peculiarities – he "just doesn't walk, he just doesn't talk", as his mother emphasizes, highlighting that his other capacities are not diminished.
