Finanças na Quebrada: Financial Education That Transforms Lives

Discover how Turma do Jiló and the Finanças na Quebrada project empower communities with essential knowledge

The Finanças na Quebrada project, by Turma do Jiló, empowers communities like Heliópolis with financial education. Through community multipliers and individual mentoring, young people and adults learn to manage their finances consciously. This initiative solidifies knowledge and transforms local realities.

Turma do Jiló, an inclusive ecosystem focused on Inclusive Education and Diversity, leads the Finanças na Quebrada project. This initiative aims to bring financial education to communities, promoting social impact and collective empowerment. With the support of Turma do Jiló, the project empowers participants through a practical and inclusive approach, strengthening bonds and building support networks.

In this chat, Mari, a program educator, introduces us to the daily routine of the workshop at EMF Gonçalves in Heliópolis, where Matheus and Nat, former students and now multipliers, share their knowledge with EJA (Youth and Adult Education) classes, primarily composed of women and mothers between 30 and 40 years old.

Multiplying Knowledge: From the Community to the Community

The major differential of Finanças na Quebrada is its community multipliers methodology. Matheus and Nat, who were previously students of the course, are now responsible for transmitting what they learned. This approach ensures that knowledge is shared authentically and relevantly, coming from those who truly understand the community's challenges.

The workshops, like the one held in Heliópolis, focus on essential topics such as financial management, conscious consumption, and financial organization. The goal is to go beyond theory, teaching how to identify one's budget and overcome daily difficulties that are often not addressed in formal education. It's about understanding where every cent goes, whether at the supermarket or on a credit card, and how this relates to each individual's routine.

Individualized Mentoring: Support That Transforms

To solidify learning and ensure that each participant can apply their knowledge, the project features a support network program. Volunteers act as mentors, offering individualized guidance. This mentoring is crucial for students to ask questions and, more importantly, plan their financial future more responsibly. As mentioned in the conversation, this proximity creates bonds and allows for more targeted support, uniquely transforming each person's life.

Beyond Numbers: Behavioral Finance and Emotions

One of the highlights of Finanças na Quebrada is the understanding that financial education goes far beyond numbers and spreadsheets; it is deeply connected to human behavior and emotions. The discussion about the brain's amygdala, for example, illustrates how our individual experiences and the environment in which we were raised shape our financial decisions.

Our life stories, the examples we receive, and even our mental health directly influence how we deal with money. The project recognizes that to achieve a sustainable financial life, it is essential to understand and control these emotions, promoting a transformative reflection on how we view the world and our choices.

The Finanças na Quebrada project demonstrates that financial education is a powerful tool for social inclusion. By empowering individuals and communities, it not only improves the financial lives of many but also strengthens bonds, promotes autonomy, and builds a more equitable and welcoming future. It is an invitation to reflect on the power of knowledge and solidarity in transforming realities.
