In this article, we will explore the "Finanças na Quebrada" project, an initiative by Turma do Jiló, in partnership with UNAS, SASF, and Telecentro, which brings financial education to the communities of Heliópolis and Jardim São Savério, in São Paulo. With the goal of transforming lives and promoting community empowerment, the project trains local women, youth, and educators.
Heliópolis: Power and the Urgency of Financial Education
Heliópolis, São Paulo's largest favela, is a place of strength and diversity, with approximately 200,000 people across 1 million square meters. Known as an "educator neighborhood", it proves to be fertile ground for development-oriented initiatives. However, talking about money – how to spend, save, and economize – is fundamental and needs to be accessible to everyone. The project recognizes that financial management is a crucial tool to improve residents' quality of life and reduce their economic vulnerability.
Three Pillars of Transformation: Empowerment and Multiplication
The "Finanças na Quebrada" project was carefully structured into three groups, each focusing on strategic demographics to maximize community impact:
1. Women's Empowerment
The first group was dedicated to women, who represent the majority of household heads in Heliópolis. Providing them with financial management tools is essential so they can achieve their dreams and strengthen their family foundation.
2. Training Young Entrepreneurs
With the second group, the project encouraged youth in entrepreneurship and financial planning. Preparing them for a more prosperous future means investing in the potential of the new generation and fostering local development.
3. Financial Multipliers in the Community
The project's biggest dream is for its results to reach the entire community. For this reason, the third group focused on training multipliers. Educators from UNAS and professionals from SASF were trained to disseminate knowledge about financial behavior, ensuring that inclusive education spreads throughout Heliópolis.
One participant highlighted the importance of the project's methodology, stating: "I think this is the best financial education course I've ever had. It explains things, and we understand. And that's very important." She emphasizes the relevance of knowing how to invest, even with limited resources, to achieve life goals.
Towards a More Prosperous and Inclusive Future
Inclusive education and the transformative power of diversity are the foundation of this project. It is believed that improving communities' financial literacy is the bridge to achieving dreams, reducing economic vulnerability, and driving social and sustainable development. By empowering women, youth, and educators, the "Finanças na Quebrada" project is creating a network that will carry knowledge forward, strengthening inclusion and community empowerment.
