In this inspiring gathering, young people from Turma do Jiló's Youth Volunteering Project joined forces with Projeto Vozes da Periferia and the NGO Gerando Falcões for a transformative initiative in the Favela do Haiti, São Paulo's first 3D Favela. Aiming to promote recycling awareness and community care, this project demonstrated how sports, culture, and education can be pillars for change.
3D Favela: Pillars for Social Transformation
Favela do Haiti, located in the East Zone of São Paulo, is a model of urban transformation based on the "3D Favela" concept. This project, which inspires other communities in Brazil and mirrors initiatives from Medellín, Colombia, shows how education and culture can restore dignity and foster development.
But what does 3D mean? The answer is clear and powerful:
- Dignified: Focuses on ensuring minimum living conditions, such as water, energy, and housing, essential for human dignity.
- Digital: Integrates technology as a tool to find solutions and connect people, promoting digital inclusion.
- Developed: Aims for human and collective development through projects that empower and strengthen residents.
The History and Name of Favela do Haiti
The story of Favela do Haiti began on April 16, 2015, with the occupation of a plot of land. After a great collective effort known as a mutirão (community-led task force), the community was formed. The name "Favela do Haiti" is a touching tribute to Jean Charles, the first Haitian to actively participate in the community's construction, assisting in measuring and organizing the shacks. This gesture demonstrates respect for diversity and each individual's contribution to the formation of the place.
Volunteering in Action: Awareness and Recycling
During the visit, youth from Turma do Jiló's Youth Volunteering and participants from the Projeto Vozes da Periferia got hands-on. A practical recyclable waste collection activity was carried out with an interesting dynamic: initially, trash was deliberately scattered to provoke residents' reflection on collective responsibility. The idea was to show that the community, although clean and resembling a gated community, faces daily challenges with improper waste disposal by some.
This action not only encouraged the separation of materials like plastic, paper, and metal but also reinforced the importance of sustainability and job creation through recycling. It's a way to value local work and create a healthier, more prosperous environment for the approximately 260 families living there.
A Fairer and More Inclusive Future
The visit to Favela do Haiti and the interaction with Gerando Falcões are clear examples of how volunteering and inclusive education can build bridges and generate real impact. By supporting community development and engaging young people in social actions, Turma do Jiló and its partners demonstrate that, together, it's possible to build a more just, egalitarian, and welcoming world for everyone. This journey is an invitation for more people to be inspired and join this wave of good, where no one is left behind.
