Social Media and Image: The Pro Triathlete Challenge

A lack of institutional support leaves personal branding and career transitions up to individual initiatives in triathlon.

While amateur athletes often command massive online followings, professional triathletes still face a lack of institutional support to build their personal brands. Industry experts emphasize the need for structured guidance to ensure long-term career sustainability.

In today's endurance sports landscape, a digital presence has become just as crucial as race results. While many amateur athletes achieve massive visibility and high engagement on social media—sometimes monetizing their media footprint more than their athletic performance—professional competitors still struggle to professionalize their personal brand.

The lack of institutional support in personal branding

The dynamic between social media and professionalism in sports was discussed on the Café com Tri podcast by coach Eduardo Braz of ID_Endurance, in a conversation with Wagner Spadotto. When asked about programs run by federations or the Brazilian Triathlon Confederation (CBTri) to guide elite athletes in personal branding and career transition, Braz noted that the sport still lacks structured support.

According to the coach, social media management in the professional scene still relies mostly on individual, organic efforts led by athletes alongside their coaches and advisors. More professionalized, consistent branding projects remain limited to top-tier performers, such as the steps taken by Miguel Hidalgo, while governing bodies usually limit their involvement to occasional press releases and social media posts.

Career transition and sustainability in sports

Beyond digital positioning during competitive years, post-career planning remains another critical hurdle. Although sporadic initiatives and isolated career-transition courses have been offered in the past, Braz emphasized that the absence of a systematic approach hurts athletes who dedicate themselves full-time to the professional circuit.

For those who make a living in high-performance sports, building a personal brand and learning to leverage the networking opportunities created by the triathlon ecosystem is essential—not only to attract sponsors today, but also to secure long-term livelihood options.
