Patrícia Farias Marks 10-Year Leme to Pontal Milestone

To mark a decade since her historic swim, the open-water athlete gathered 12 women for an all-female night relay across Rio's coast.

Ten years after becoming the first woman to complete the Leme to Pontal crossing, Patrícia Farias celebrated the historic milestone with a team effort. She organized two all-female relay teams who tackled the challenging open-water route overnight in Rio de Janeiro.

Reaching the ten-year anniversary of a historic athletic milestone calls for a celebration worthy of the challenge. As the first woman to conquer the iconic ~36 km Travessia do Leme ao Pontal in Rio de Janeiro, marathon swimmer Patrícia Farias chose to mark a decade since her triumph by sharing the ocean with fellow athletes from Equipe Navegantes.

Developed alongside coach Renato Ribeiro, the project set out to create a shared open-water experience for female swimmers. Instead of a solo crossing, the initiative launched two relay teams into the ocean, bringing together 12 women eager to tackle the challenging coastal course.

Night Swimming and Team Resilience

The swim kicked off around 8:00 PM, requiring the squad to navigate the waters through the night and into the early morning hours. For many participants, this was their first encounter with an open-water crossing of such magnitude, as well as the intense challenge of swimming in the open ocean under complete darkness.

Among the 12 swimmers, one of the most inspiring stories belonged to Estela, a 76-year-old athlete. Long dreaming of competing in classic Brazilian events like the Travessia 14 Bis, Estela was overcome with emotion upon completing the relay route, showcasing the profound impact of welcoming new generations and ages into endurance sports.
