Patrícia Farias: 20 km Swim in Lake Titicaca

At 3,812 meters of altitude and 9 °C water, the Brazilian swimmer braved the Andean cold to unite sport and environmental awareness.

Patrícia Farias took on a grueling 20 km swim in Lake Titicaca under extreme cold and high-altitude conditions. Discover how ice-filled pool training and targeted nutrition fueled her achievement.

For any open water swimmer, tackling 20 km is already a major test of endurance. When the event takes place at an altitude of 3,812 meters, with water temperatures hovering between 9 °C and 10 °C, the crossing becomes an extreme battle of survival and physiological adaptation. That was precisely the challenge faced by Patrícia Farias in Lake Titicaca, embarking on a journey that combined athletic perseverance with an urgent ecological message.

The invitation to this Andean challenge carried a clear mission: to raise awareness for environmental conservation, fight water pollution in the lake, and promote sports across the region. This environmental cause directly aligned with the work Patrícia champions through her marathon swimming career.

Pool Ice Training and High-Altitude Protocol

Simulating the freezing waters of Titicaca in Brazil required creative problem-solving from the coaching staff. Lacking access to naturally frigid open water, coach Wanderley Santos came up with the idea of dumping ice overnight into an endless pool. Patrícia completed a four-hour simulated swim in near-freezing conditions, supported by Wanderley, coach Gui, Paulo Putinele, and sports nutritionist Júlia Vasconcelos.

Logistics also presented significant timing constraints. For a race held nearly 4,000 meters above sea level, standard sports protocols recommend approximately two weeks of on-site altitude acclimatization. Due to professional obligations, Patrícia was only able to arrive five days before the start.

To compensate for the abbreviated acclimatization window and mitigate the effects of reduced oxygen availability, nutritionist Júlia Vasconcelos designed a 45-day protocol using customized beetroot-based supplementation to enhance vascular response and oxygen delivery during high-intensity exertion.

Extreme Cold, Thin Air, and a Warm Welcome

On race day, the ambient air temperature hovered around 10 °C, matching the water temperature. To complete the distance without succumbing to hypothermia while maintaining proper stroke mechanics over the long haul, Patrícia opted for a sleeveless wetsuit.

Throughout the crossing, the high altitude took its toll. The constant sensation of breathlessness required intense mental focus, forcing the swimmer to lock her breathing cadence and rhythm close to the support boat. In the final stretch, the grueling effort was rewarded by overwhelming local enthusiasm, as crowds lined the shores of the lake to celebrate the Brazilian athlete's arrival.
