Mastering T1 and the Mount Line in Ironman 70.3

Essential tips from Bruna Mahn on exiting the water, helmet rules, and proper positioning to mount your bike safely.

Transitioning from swim to bike requires careful attention to key details to avoid penalties and chaos. Learn how to organize your gear in T1 and execute a smooth, safe bike mount.

The first transition (T1) of an Ironman 70.3 is often one of the most chaotic moments of the race, especially for first-timers. The sudden shift from a horizontal position in the water to an upright stance on asphalt can cause dizziness or mild disorientation. The first recommendation is simple yet crucial: as soon as your feet hit the sand or exit ramp, remove or lift your swim goggles immediately so you can see your path clearly and avoid tripping.

Mental prep and mandatory transition area rules

With adrenaline running high and athletes sprinting in every direction, visualizing your sequence of actions beforehand is what ensures a fast, error-free transition. The order in which you put on your socks, cycling shoes, or sunglasses can be customized to your preference, but there is one mandatory rule that must never be broken: your helmet must be fully buckled on your head before you unrack your bike.

To keep the area organized and avoid penalties, all equipment used in the swim—such as your wetsuit, swim cap, and goggles—must be placed inside your designated transition bag, leaving nothing hanging on the rack. Items like running shoes can be pre-positioned outside, neatly arranged within your space so they don't get wet or encroach on your neighbor's spot.

Mastering T1 and the Mount Line in Ironman 70.3

Crossing the mount line safely

When wheeling your bike out of T1, you will approach the mount line. It is critical to remember that you may only mount your bike after crossing this marked line on the ground. If the mount line is crowded, don't hesitate to run or jog a bit farther ahead to an open spot where you can mount calmly and safely.

Race marshals and officials are typically stationed at this checkpoint to clearly mark the exact mount boundary, making the process seamless for all competitors heading out onto the bike course.
