Gabriel Ganme Recalls Roots in Medicine and Youth Sports

The physician and ultramarathoner shares on XTREMMA Sports how family encouragement and sporting variety shaped his lifelong habits.

In an interview on XTREMMA Sports, Gabriel Ganme recalls his early athletic days at Clube Monte Líbano. He advocates for a diverse, play-oriented multisport experience during childhood.

Gabriel Ganme's connection to medicine began long before college. Coming from a family that owned a hospital, with a father and uncles working in healthcare, his career path emerged naturally. The image of his father leaving home early, dressed in white and carrying his medical bag, marked his earliest childhood years and cemented a vocation that felt inevitable.

Athletic awakening at Clube Monte Líbano

While medicine came almost by osmosis, sports required deliberate action. With a mother focused on the arts and unattached to physical exercise, a sedentary lifestyle began creeping in for Gabriel and his two brothers. Recognizing the situation, his father—who had paused his own athletic routine due to the demands of early medical practice—decided to intervene and brought the three boys to the club.

At Clube Monte Líbano, Ganme joined the PI (Sports Integration Plan), a program designed for youth athletic initiation. The initiative opened doors to a wide repertoire of sports, leading with tennis—a game he fell in love with and played for many years.

Multisport experience and the importance of play

From that initial spark, physical activity accompanied Ganme throughout his youth. Vacations were defined by surfing in Guarujá, balanced alongside tennis and futsal during the school year, before scuba diving entered his routine. Except for sports requiring significant height, such as basketball and volleyball, his pursuit of new athletic experiences was relentless.

Speaking with Shubi Guimarães on the XTREMMA Sports podcast—an episode that also explores his transitions into dive medicine and ultramarathons—the physician emphasized that diverse motor skills in childhood build an essential athletic foundation for adult life. For Ganme, children's sports experiences should be grounded in joy and playfulness, warning against undue pressure and early specialization that turn exercise into a stressful chore.
