Uruguay Exit Boosts Flamengo with Four Returning Players

Arrascaeta, Nico De La Cruz, and Varela return after the World Cup, while Viña negotiates his River Plate departure.

Following Uruguay's elimination from the World Cup, Flamengo welcomes back several first-team players after a scheduled break. Bernardo Ramos analyzes their physical condition and the contractual situation surrounding left-back Viña.

The elimination of the Uruguayan national team from the World Cup, following a 1-0 defeat to Spain, had an immediate impact on Flamengo's squad. Four players are returning to the club: Arrascaeta, Nico De La Cruz, Varela, and Viña. The athletes will not immediately travel to Portugal due to a mandatory vacation period, joining the squad for training shortly afterward.

Arrascaeta's Medical Status and De La Cruz's Intensity

In the video above, Bernardo Ramos highlights that Arrascaeta is returning to continue his physical recovery process. The midfielder was not used by coach Marcelo Bielsa during the tournament due to a preexisting muscle injury, preventing the risk of a premature return to the pitch.

On the other hand, Nico De La Cruz featured in the clash against the Spaniards, replacing Ugarte, who went off injured in the first half. The midfielder received a yellow card and displayed high physical intensity. For Bernardo, his performance with the national team contrasts with his frequent absences for the club, partly due to restrictions regarding artificial turf, which the journalist describes as a technical distortion in the Brazilian Championship. Signed for $16 million paid upfront, De La Cruz's stay remains backed by termination clause conditions and his track record in major finals, such as the Club World Cup final against Paris Saint-Germain.

Varela's Return and the Viña Negotiations

Varela, the starting right-back for the Celeste, is also available again. In the case of Viña, currently on loan at River Plate, there is an impasse stemming from the Argentine club's desire not to retain the player prior to the agreed loan conclusion.

Bernardo believes Flamengo is right to demand financial compensation from River Plate to accept an early return, a negotiation that will need to be led by José Boto. The Rubro-Negro board is working toward a budgetary target of generating R$256 million in player sales. In technical terms, Bernardo considers Viña the squad's best left-back when fully fit, pointing back to the severe knee ligament injury suffered in the 1-1 draw against Palmeiras under former manager Tite.
