Flamengo Search for Mystery Striker in Transfer Market
Operating on a tighter budget after signing Lucas Paquetá, the club relies on José Botto's scouting network.
Flamengo is evaluating affordable South American options to provide backup for striker Pedro. Facing steep transfer sales targets and heavy spending earlier this season, the board is leaning on José Botto's scouting department.
Flamengo is working behind the scenes to secure a new striker during this transfer window. According to reports from Paparazzo Rubro-Negro and corroborated by Bruno Castanha, the club is not targeting Davi Romero, the Tigre forward valued between $7 million and $8 million. Instead, the board aims to identify an alternative and more accessible profile in South American football, trusting in technical scouting.
Financial prudence is necessary due to an already stretched transfer budget. Bernardo Ramos detailed the Rubro-Negro financial situation, which included a major investment of €42 million—plus taxes and agent commissions—to bring back Lucas Paquetá. In addition, the club established a budgetary target of R$ 256 million in player sales, having achieved R$ 47 million so far alongside the €10 million fee from Rian Roberto's transfer. This leaves roughly R$ 150 million remaining to hit the target, requiring a sharp focus on outgoings before making major new investments.
Alternative for the attacking focal point
The search for this mystery striker is designed to provide immediate cover for Pedro. In Ramos' view, deploying Bruno Henrique as a makeshift central striker is not an ideal solution against opponents defending with low blocks and compact lines. Because Bruno Henrique thrives when given space for pace and transitional play against high defensive lines, the squad requires a natural center-forward capable of holding up the ball and playing with his back to goal.
Scouting profile and José Botto's role
Under these conditions, any signing will follow the scouting blueprint led by sporting director José Botto, who previously worked at Shakhtar and Benfica. Ramos points out that the club recently passed on winger Mikey Johnston from West Bromwich Albion in favor of higher-cost investments like Saúl, Emerson Royal (€9 million), Carrascal (€12 million), and Samuel Lino (€22 million). However, the current window demands cost-effective precision, similar to the scouting approach that brought Jhon Arias and Rodrigo Castilho to Fluminense.
