Hi there, Stuart Epps here, welcoming you to Stu's Tubes. I'm excited to share a bit about my recent work, particularly my remote production efforts through Music X-ray. This brilliant platform, conceived by Mike McCreedy, connects talented artists with music industry pros like myself. It allows me to take home recordings from musicians worldwide and elevate them to broadcast or release quality, right from my studio in Cookham, Berkshire.
The Power of Remote Production with Music X-ray
For many years, I've been working with Music X-ray, a fantastic initiative that bridges the gap between aspiring artists and seasoned industry professionals. Musicians, artists, record producers, engineers, and publishers can all interact, fostering new collaborations. My role often involves transforming raw home studio tracks into polished, professional-sounding records. Using my experience, honed over decades working with giants like Elton John, Led Zeppelin, Chris Rea, and Twisted Sister, I focus on enhancing the quality and production value of these remote projects. It's truly about remote producing and keeping the music alive and thriving.
The "Yoga Mama" Project: A Challenge Accepted
Recently, an American artist named Alan Lorden connected with me via Music X-ray. He sent over a rock track titled "Yoga Mama." I immediately loved the song but felt the mix could be improved. The intriguing part? Alan then revealed it had originally been mixed by the legendary Eddie Kramer – an icon who's worked with The Beatles, The Stones, and Led Zeppelin! While initially a bit intimidated, I believed I could bring a different perspective to the mix. Alan promptly sent all the individual tracks over, and I got stuck in.
Crafting the Sound: From Raw Tracks to AC/DC Vibe
Working on "Yoga Mama" was a fascinating process. Alan is an incredibly talented keyboard player, and he'd assembled a stellar group of musicians, including a great guitarist and a singer with a powerful, almost AC/DC-esque vocal style. I dedicated a good deal of time to refining the mix, focusing on elements like the drums and overall sonic balance. My goal was to truly enhance the track and bring out its full potential. Upon sending the revised mix back, Alan was absolutely thrilled, confirming that I'd put it "right where I thought it should be but wasn't happening." His feedback was incredibly rewarding, echoing the sentiment that the track now sounds like an "AC/DC track!"
I'm truly enjoying these remote collaborations and the opportunity to help artists achieve their musical vision. I look forward to receiving more great music to work on, ensuring that quality sounds continue to be made, keeping the vibrant spirit of music thriving.
