Jéssica Fazzio's Resilience at the California Marathon

Balancing personal challenges and treadmill workouts, the marathoner clocked 3:08 at the technical CIM in Sacramento.

Jéssica Fazzio tackled the California International Marathon (CIM) during a demanding period in her personal life. Having completed most of her training on a treadmill, the athlete crossed the finish line in 3:08 with gratitude and poise.

Running a marathon demands physical commitment and emotional resilience, yet the ideal training cycle rarely aligns smoothly with everyday life. During an appearance on the Girls Who Run podcast, Jéssica Fazzio shared an inside look at her journey at the California International Marathon (CIM), a storied race held in Sacramento, California, which she took on amidst delicate personal circumstances.

Juggling a family illness alongside a recent professional promotion, the athlete had to balance hospital visits, expanding career responsibilities, and 26.2-mile preparation. Her solo trip to Northern California carried deep symbolic weight: the goal was to run purely for herself, reconnecting with the joy of why she started without the pressure of chasing PRs or proving anything to anyone.

Course Challenges and Treadmill Training

The CIM is renowned across the American running circuit as a fast course that finishes in front of the California State Capitol in Sacramento, yet its elevation profile requires careful strategy. The route features rolling hills and extended net-downhill sections, demanding specific muscular conditioning to absorb the impact of continuous descents.

Faced with tight schedules and family demands, Jéssica completed roughly 90% of her training volume on the treadmill, including 20-mile (32 km) long runs and tempo blocks paced between 4:10 and 4:15 min/km (6:42 to 6:50 min/mile). Although her workouts aligned with a sub-3-hour goal, indoor training could not fully replicate the physical pounding of downhill road running.

Race Day in Sacramento and a Joyful Finish

On race day, the marathoner split the first half in 1:29, maintaining a strong, steady clip. Around mile 17 (kilometer 28), cumulative fatigue and foot pain from the downhill impact began taking a physical toll during the rolling transitions.

Instead of getting discouraged, the athlete chose to manage her pace with grace. She progressively adjusted her target toward the 3:05 to 3:10 window, crossing the finish line in 3:08. The result celebrated an inspiring marathon defined by adaptability and the pure joy of reaching the finish line during life's most complex chapters.
