Bruno Kuntz Recalls Panama Mishap and Lost World Slot
IronStats creator sought Marbella Worlds qualification, but stomach issues turned him into a spectator.
Appearing on Café com Tri, Bruno Kuntz shared the unglamorous behind-the-scenes reality of his race in Panama. Between last-minute bike course changes and multiple restroom stops during the run, the triathlete watched his qualification dream slip away.
Every triathlete has at least one story where detailed planning went down the drain on race day. On Café com Tri's traditional storytelling segment, IronStats creator Bruno Kuntz recalled one of his most frustrating yet comical experiences on the middle-distance circuit: attempting to earn a slot for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Panama.
From chasing a Marbella slot to bike course surprises
The motivation to take on the Panamanian race came from home. Bruno's wife had already secured her spot for the Ironman 70.3 World Championship in Marbella at the 2024 Aracaju event. Not wanting to travel merely as a spectator, Bruno decided to toe the line at Ironman 70.3 Panama, determined to punch his own ticket to Spain.
The first obstacle arose while on two wheels. Organizers altered the bike route, turning the leg into a course with rolling hills and false flats—terrain for which he had not specifically trained.
Restroom stops and shifting into spectator mode
If the bike leg took its toll, the run transformed the race into a test of survival. Within the first hour of the half marathon, Bruno suffered severe gastrointestinal distress and had to stop at the porta-potty four times. In good spirits, the athlete emphasized that he preferred losing time with traditional bathroom stops over the alternative of soiling his race kit on the move.
With any shot at a podium or qualification gone after the repeated interruptions, the extreme exertion was unmistakable in the official finish-line photos, which showed him with hollow eyes and an exhausted expression. With his athletic goal dashed, Bruno's only option was to step into his official role as his wife's number-one supporter in Marbella, complete with cheering and applause along the course.
