Nature is far more than just a backdrop for adventure sports: in Outward Bound Brazil (OBB)'s methodology, the outdoor environment serves as a true pedagogical classroom. As an ambassador for the Azimute program, mountaineer Aretha Duarte works directly as a liaison for the organization, connecting youth from social projects to transformative expeditions across the country.
Connecting with Outward Bound Brazil and the Azimute Program
Aretha's partnership with OBB took root during the Montanha Festival in São Bento do Sapucaí. Her immediate connection with the organization's social and environmental mission led to an invitation to become an ambassador for Azimute. Her core role is building institutional bridges: securing funding to make group sessions possible and connecting NGOs and teenagers who can benefit from this immersive experience.
Beyond institutional advocacy, Aretha actively joins the expeditions in the field. She also recently completed the FEAL (Outdoor Educator Training) course in Chapada Diamantina, gaining deeper insight into the rigor and effectiveness of OBB's methodologies. Operating in Brazil for 26 years, the organization delivers programs ranging from weekend immersions to multi-day backcountry treks.
From the Mountains to Daily Life: The Impact of Azimute
Formerly known as Desafio OBB, the initiative was renamed Azimute—a navigational concept referring to setting a course and finding direction. The program focuses on supporting underprivileged children and teenagers, offering them life-changing experiences such as camping under starry skies and hiking with heavy backpacks to mountain summits.
By pushing through fatigue and overcoming the challenges of steep trails in the Mantiqueira or Diamantina ranges, youth undergo a profound journey of self-discovery. Gaining a sense of capability, autonomy, and belonging shatters psychological barriers. This newfound confidence extends far beyond the trail, positively influencing their family life, school performance, and broader community.
How to Support and Create New Opportunities
Like many social initiatives, one of OBB's main hurdles is fundraising to cover operational costs for participants who cannot afford them. The organization runs sponsorship campaigns allowing individuals and businesses to sponsor participants by funding spots in its programs.
Investing in outdoor education goes beyond funding an adventure trip. It is a proven pedagogical method that helps shape mindful, resilient citizens ready to chart their own paths forward.
