What Basketball Teaches Us About Leadership and Teamwork
Victor Dellorto analyzes how on-court dynamics and the role of the bench shape decision-making in business.
In a conversation on Marketing - The Podcast, Victor Dellorto connects lessons from basketball with people management. The discussion covers active team listening and how defeat serves as a catalyst for growth.
Victor Dellorto, founder and CEO of Deskfy, spoke with Bruno Gimenes on Marketing - The Podcast about the impact of sports on leadership development and the corporate environment. The excerpt is part of a broader conversation on brand management, decentralization, and multi-location marketing.
Recalling his early days in sports, Dellorto shares that he reached 6 feet (1.83 m) tall by age 12, initially playing as a center before shifting positions as other players grew taller. For him, early team experiences leave lasting impressions: "There are so many things we learn during that stage through basketball that we carry for the rest of our lives," Dellorto notes in the video above.
Team management and active listening
In Dellorto's view, game dynamics directly influenced his approach as a leader. A core insight is recognizing that collective performance does not rely solely on the technically strongest athlete.
"I think one of the greatest lessons I took from basketball is how the bench plays just as much as those on the court, right? And it makes an enormous difference when the bench is engaged," Dellorto explains, highlighting the need to also listen to those outside the starting five.
The role of defeat in personal growth
Another key takeaway highlighted in the discussion is handling losses and frustration. Rather than derailing strategy, adverse outcomes act as catalysts for adjustments in the next cycle.
"And sports give us that—they teach us how to lose, right? Losing is part of the game. Honestly, there's no better motivation than losing; if I'm being frank, it's in defeat that you find that extra energy you were missing," Dellorto states.
