Shrink Your Ego, Broaden Your World, and Serve Others

A guide to embracing beauty, letting go of self-importance, and creating genuine value for others.

When we witness the vastness of the world, our sense of self naturally shrinks. Criticism loses its sting, opening space in our hearts to create meaningful value and bring joy to those around us.

Stepping out to experience the wider world—whether traveling into breathtaking nature or simply enjoying the breeze from your balcony—offers a wonderful opportunity to expand and lighten your mind. When the mind absorbs beautiful scenery, the brain naturally releases feel-good neurotransmitters. Intentionally taking in uplifting sights and recalling joyful moments trains the mind to settle into happiness, rather than constantly chasing after raw adrenaline or fear.

Stay Small in Ego, Think Big in Service

A vital lesson from the vastness of the world is realizing that human beings are merely a tiny part of nature's grand design. When we view ourselves as small, our ego and self-attachment naturally diminish. Consequently, the sting of criticism or conflict fades away. As the saying goes, keep yourself as small as possible in terms of ego, but strive to be as great as possible in serving and doing good for others.

Refine the Self Through Patience and Compassion

In Buddhist teachings, enduring criticism from peers or those wiser than us is commendable, but maintaining patience and compassion when slighted by those with fewer virtues is the true mark of spiritual refinement. Training yourself to be a source of smiles and encouragement not only heals those around you, but also deeply engraves goodness into your own subconscious.

Appreciate the Support and Virtues of Others

Regardless of religious belief, cultivating a deep connection with the sacred—whether God in Christianity, or the Buddha, Dhamma, Sangha, and celestial beings in Buddhism—reminds us to stay grounded. When success arrives, we recognize that it never stems from our efforts alone, but from positive energy, supportive environments, and the helping hands of others. Acknowledging the virtues of others and expressing gratitude for every kindness is the true path to humility and lasting inner peace.
