Learn to move beyond the familiar for growth and a better life.
Dr. Ddnard Napattalung explores the mental programs that keep us stuck in familiar yet painful situations. Discover the path to genuine change and growth, understand why we fear new beginnings, and learn how to overcome these obstacles.
Dr. Ddnard Napattalung discusses a crucial point about human needs – the tendency to cling to what is familiar, even when it brings suffering or discomfort. A common issue people consult him about is the reluctance to change jobs or make other life changes due to fear of the uncertainty ahead.
The 'Same Program' That Traps Us
In our lives, we are often trapped by familiarity. Many times, the human mind's program is to desire something that is “the same” or a “Same Program.” For instance, some people tolerate moderate pain in a relationship or endure a poor work environment simply because these things are already familiar, and they can tolerate them to a certain extent.
Dr. Ddnard gives an example of a woman abused by her partner who still chooses to stay with him due to familiarity with the same suffering and fear of the unknown with a new person. Or a highly capable employee stuck in a bad company for 15 years for the same reason: at least this bad situation is familiar, and she dares not seek new opportunities.
The Fear of the Unknown
This very deep-seated human need for sameness is what holds us back from progress. We fear that if we step out of our comfort zone, we might encounter something worse or be unsure of what to expect. This fear makes us tolerate the familiar suffering we know, rather than embracing new opportunities that could be better.
Therefore, Dr. Ddnard invites us to ask ourselves: Is our life running on a “Same Program” or “familiarity,” preventing us from daring to start anew, launch new businesses, or truly change for the better?
Sometimes, global circumstances emerge to constrain and pressure us, forcing us to start anew for something truly beneficial to our lives. This can be an opportunity to push past our own limits. The important thing is to keep fighting without giving up and to train ourselves to be ready for change, because while we may not like everything in life, perseverance and determination are qualities we should cultivate.
