10 Steps to a Well-Formed Outcome

1. State Your Goal Positively

Your goal should be a clear vision of what you want to happen and how it feels, not just what you want to avoid. For example, instead of saying, "I don't want to be sick," which focuses on illness, change it to "I want to be healthy, well, and free from disease." When our brains receive a positive image, it helps drive our body and mind towards that outcome effectively.

2. Initiated and Maintained by You

Crucially, the goal must be within your own power and responsibility. You must be able to create and control the actions that lead to that goal, rather than trying to control or force others to do what you want. For example, hoping others will love you might not be directly controllable, but developing good qualities in yourself to attract love is something you can do.

3. Sensory Specificity: What You See, Hear, and Feel

Once you visualize achieving your goal, detail what you will see, hear, and feel at that moment. Who are you with? What is the environment like? What emotions are you experiencing? Creating this complete image and experience in your mind will help your subconscious work to attract those things into your life.

4. Is the Goal Truly Ecological (Beneficial) for You?

The goal you set must genuinely have a positive impact on all dimensions of your life, not just one. Sometimes, if we haven't achieved a goal, it might be because, deep down, we feel that attaining it could cause problems or negative impacts on other important aspects of our lives. For example, wanting to work abroad but worrying about family in Thailand. You must ensure the goal aligns truly with your values and the life you desire.

5. Is It Compelling and Challenging?

A good goal must have an appropriate level of challenge – neither too small nor too large. This challenge will create motivation, inspiring you to take action and persevere until successful. If your goal is too minor, you might not feel enthusiastic enough to dedicate yourself to it.

6. What is the Value of This Goal?

Ask yourself: What meaning and value does this goal hold for you, your family, society, or even the world? Having clear values behind a goal helps build faith and strong determination, giving you the power to overcome obstacles and truly drive yourself to success.

7. What is the Context of Achieving the Goal?

Imagine the context or the perfect surrounding circumstances when you achieve that goal. Who will you be with, where will you be, what will you be doing, and how will you feel at that moment? Specifying details about people, places, activities, and feelings will make your goal more vivid and tangible in your mind.

8. What Resources Are Needed?

Clearly identify the resources you need to achieve your goal. This could include knowledge, skills, abilities, or even people you need to meet, networks you need to build, as well as the steps and actions you need to take to make that goal a reality.

9. What Might Stop You?

Confront the obstacles or things that might prevent you from achieving this goal. Ask yourself the questions you're afraid to ask to clearly identify what's holding you back. Clearly seeing obstacles will help you plan how to deal with them and overcome them.

10. Break Down Goals into Bite-size Steps

Even if you have a clear big goal, it's crucial to break down that goal into small steps or "bite-size" chunks that are easy to manage. Doing so allows you to experience success with each small step, which is vital for maintaining motivation and commitment throughout the journey to your larger goal.

Goal setting using the Well-Formed Outcome framework isn't just about stating what we want; it's about creating a clear, vivid image that aligns with our true selves. When you apply these 10 principles, you will find that the journey to success becomes more achievable and exciting.
